BRDAA Junior Member, Verity Spence, excels at River Spey Course

The late Lionel Main, head ghillie at Castle Grant on the river Spey, was an inspirational mentor, a true countryman, great teacher and a loyal friend to many.

BRDAA is delighted to have sponsored junior member, Verity Spence, to attend a week-long residential course established in Lionel’s memory.

The course was run in partnership by Countryside Learning Scotland and Windward Education Ltd and sponsored by House of Bruar and Saxavord UK Space Port.  The Reidhaven Estate kindly donated one week of exclusive access to one of the Castle Grant Beats on the River Spey.

Verity and her fellow students fished for salmon and seatrout under close supervision and received instruction on angling technique while gaining a greater understanding of the aquatic environment and Atlantic Salmon conservation.

The group also experienced the role of a ghillie and each student had the opportunity to lead and run an angling event, gaining accreditation for their learning from Qualifications Scotland at SCQF level 3.

A good few fish were caught and Verity hooked and landed this fabulous 4lb seatrout.

Well done indeed Verity and we wish you the all the very best for your bright future in angling!

Gavin Robertson, Secretary on behalf of the BRDAA Committee.
